Does the shop have the capabilities your part needs under one roof?
Every handoff between vendors adds freight, lead time, and finger-pointing. A part that needs cutting, forming, welding, and machining moves faster through a shop that does all of it—check the equipment list rather than taking the word “full-service” on faith.
Are the welders certified for your material?
Ask specifically: AWS D1.1 for structural carbon steel, AWS D1.6 for stainless. A shop doing code-quality work will answer immediately and tell you how procedures and inspection are handled. Vague answers about “experienced guys” are an answer too.
Can the shop handle your size and weight?
Floor space, crane capacity, and door sizes set hard limits on what a shop can physically build. For heavy fabrication, ask about the largest comparable weldment the shop has produced—and how it shipped.
How does the shop communicate during a job?
The difference between a good project and a bad one is usually communication: drawing questions raised before cutting, schedule changes flagged early, photos when you ask. You can test this before committing—the way a shop handles your RFQ questions predicts how it will handle your job.
Is the quoted lead time real?

Does location actually matter?
For heavy or frequent work, yes. Freight on large weldments is real money, site visits and field measurements are easier when the shop can drive over, and outage support depends on proximity. What does a warranty tell you?
A shop that backs workmanship in writing—ours carries a one-year warranty—is telling you where it expects its quality to stand a year after delivery. Ask, and get it in the quote.
What does a shop floor visit actually tell you?
More than any website. Look for organized material storage with grades identified, fixtures and weld tables in real use, calibrated measuring equipment, and work in process that resembles your work. Ask who would run your job and talk to them. Shops are proud of floors that run well—hesitation about a visit is information too.
How do you compare quotes that assume different things?
Normalize before you rank. One quote includes material certs, inspection, and finish; another quietly excludes them. One promises a date; another promises a date it can hit. Build a one-page comparison of scope items—material, welding standard, inspection, finish, freight, warranty—and fill it from each quote. The cheapest number frequently stops being cheapest on paper you control.
What do past-work photos really verify?
Scale and category: that the shop has genuinely built things like yours, at your size, in your material. Photos do not replace references or a visit, but they filter the field fast.
