The finish is the part of a fabrication everyone sees—and the part that protects everything underneath. The durable truth of industrial painting: surface preparation, not topcoat brand, decides how long a finish lasts. A modest coating over excellent prep outlives a premium coating over mill scale every time.

Why does surface prep matter more than the paint?

Coatings fail from underneath. Mill scale, weld spatter, oil, and rust between the steel and the paint give corrosion a place to start and the film a place to lift. Proper prep—cleaning, grinding welds smooth where specified, and roughening the surface so coatings grip—is where finish life is actually built.

What finish options do fabricated parts typically get?

Shop primer for parts that will be finish-painted after installation; full paint systems for equipment going straight to service; and bare or finished stainless where the material itself is the protection. The right choice depends on the environment the part lives in—the same logic that drives material selection in the first place.

When is paint the wrong answer entirely?

Food-contact zones and washdown environments where coatings can chip into product—that is stainless territory. Likewise, wear surfaces that abrasion will strip in weeks are better served by AR plate than by any coating. Paint protects; it does not perform structural or sanitary work.

How do welds get prepared for finishing?

To the level the drawing specifies: as-welded for ordinary equipment, spatter removed and edges eased for better coating coverage, or ground and blended where appearance or cleanability demands it. Weld finish levels cost real hours—specify them by zone rather than blanket-coating the whole part with the highest requirement.

What should the RFQ say about finishing?

The finish system or standard if you have one, the color, the service environment, and which surfaces matter cosmetically. “Paint it blue” quotes differently than a specified system with a required film build—clarity here prevents both underprotection and overpayment. Does finishing affect lead time?

Yes—prep, application, and cure time are real days at the end of a schedule, after all fabrication is complete. Projects with hard delivery dates should include the finish system in the earliest planning conversation, not discover it at the end.

What does an industrial paint system actually consist of?

Layers with jobs: a primer bonded to properly prepared steel for adhesion and corrosion inhibition, and one or more topcoats supplying chemical resistance, abrasion tolerance, and color. The environment picks the chemistry—a dry warehouse frame and a chemical-splash zone should not wear the same system. When a specification exists, it names the system and film build; when it does not, the honest inputs are the environment and the expected repaint interval.

How should finished parts be handled and shipped?

As if the finish were a machined surface—because commercially it is. Padded forks, protected contact points, banding that does not bite through the film, and blocking that keeps parts from chafing in transit all preserve the hours just spent in the paint booth. Touch-up kits shipped with the equipment let installers repair the inevitable scuff with the correct product instead of whatever is on the shelf.

What about touch-up after installation?

Plan for it. Field assembly, welding at tie-in points, and rigging all disturb finish locally; a planned touch-up pass with matching material closes the job properly. On bolted field splices, masking faying surfaces during shop painting—where the connection design requires bare steel—is a coordination detail worth stating on the drawing.
