When does guarding need to be custom fabricated?
Older machines, modified machines and custom equipment rarely match catalog guards. Odd envelopes, retrofit drives, added conveyors and tight aisles all create geometry only measurement can solve. A guard fabricated from field measurements fits the hazard instead of approximating it.
Mesh, solid panel or polycarbonate—which is right?
Welded mesh keeps visibility and airflow and is the workhorse for most mechanical hazards. Solid sheet contains chips, coolant and sparks. Clear panels preserve sightlines where operators must watch the process. Many guards combine them—solid at the spray zone, mesh above, a clear window at the watch point.
How should guards mount?
However maintenance will actually use them. Fixed guarding suits areas nobody enters; bolted panels with captive hardware suit periodic access; hinged or removable sections with proper fasteners suit frequent service points. A guard that takes twenty minutes to remove gets left off—design for the realistic access interval and the guard stays where it belongs.
What materials survive plant life?
Painted carbon steel covers most dry industrial duty economically. Washdown zones call for stainless—the same material logic as any plant equipment. High-abrasion areas near product flow may justify heavier sections or wear strips.
Who is responsible for guarding compliance?
The employer owns compliance with applicable safety standards; the fabricator’s job is building guards to the dimensions, openings and mounting your safety review specifies—accurately, sturdily and on schedule. Bring the requirements; we build to them.
